As usual, I have used an address I can blacklist or destroy if needed (catchall rules!), just to try to find out who steals or buys addresses from others.

It seems the company Computer Futures, is one of the companies that actually steals e-mailaddresses from different sites. I checked with CodeQuest.nl, they have not given or sold my address to Computer Futures, but still, my address popped up in their mailinglist for some reason.

So, not only doesn’t Computer Futures know what kind of people they want to hire to your company (have some experience with this while working for a client of mine, they forged the résumé of this particular person by adding stuff and making stuff up), they also steal e-mailaddresses for no apparent reason.

I do wonder why people want to do business with such a company.

Okay, I admit, I’m a bad boy, as I’m not following the ‘the mail is strictly confidential’ part, but since this was SPAM anyways and, well, I did not agree to the following:

But heh, everyone has already seen the pictures, so it might be a bit late to write about my vacation. Well, not my problem. I do have to admit, South Africa wasn’t what I expected it to be. It’s way more beautiful!

And well, I do believe the pictures speak for themselves, but besides the pictures, it’s just a beautiful country. In the area’s I’ve been to, you don’t get the idea it’s a third world country, just a nice place for vacation.

I’ve even taken the trouble to actually make a couple of panorama images now. It has taken quite a lot of time to render them, and this is just about 50% of the total resolution, however Autostitch tends to give memory errors if I increase the quality / resolution further.

Yeah, back from the dead (at least temporarily), that’s me, not the game…

As far as Total Domination is concerned; I still have the sources here somewhere. Including the database designs, and all the modifications.
So yes, it’s possible to revive Total Domination. However, what I wonder about these days, are people still interested in something like a turn based, text only, strategy game?
If so, would it be possible to find admins to admin the game? – As for hosting, that’s no problem. I can host it on the same server, it’s always been on, for free.
My problem is;
I don’t have the time to develop and admin the game, I might be able to do some development, but being admin requires you to be active. As long as I am not possible to do so, I cannot be admin. So, if you want Total Domination back, please mail me or just leave something in the comments, pointing me to possible players and admins .

Just like this blog, the game can be revived.

As for the Asterisk series I was planning on writing, well, I’ve yet to write the ‘second week’, it was a nice plan, I didn’t however count on being this busy!

Het lijkt wel alsof iedereen die inmiddels een blog heeft (wat ook serieus bezocht wordt), daarna nog een blog wilt beginnen…
Bijvoorbeeld ispam.nl die als eerste (zover ik weet) begon met bloggen over (enkel) hosting gerelateerde onderwerpen.
Daarna kwam van dezelfde initiatiefnemer (mr het is mijn werk om op IRC te hangen) met de roddelsite ispx.nl en nu blijkt dat er blijkbaar zoveel interesse in de Nederlandse taal is, dat er op web-hosting-blog.be nog eentje begonnen is.

In ieder geval bij deze succes aan iedereen die dergelijk nieuws wil publiceren .

Ik vraag het me toch af, al jaren en jaren onderbreekt een overhypte weerman vanuit de meest idiote plaatsen programma’s op SBS. Maar het lijkt erop dat mensen het zelf toch echt willen. Waarom zouden ze het anders blijven doen? – Er zijn toch fans(popup alert) van die aardige meneer (de eikel ).

Maar natuurlijk kunnen de mensen die er echt wat aan willen doen, er zelf wat aan doen. Het is natuurlijk gestoord dat het nodig is dat je een apparaat moet kopen om onder dat gezeik uit te komen, maar het is wel de realiteit. Je kan onder reclame uitkomen, je kan gewoon aanklikken wat je wilt zien, wanneer je het wilt zien. Het enige wat je nodig hebt is een gezonde doses technische kennis, een grote bak tijd, en als het even kan, een grote bak geld. Zelf maak ik er bijna een sport van om mijn grijze massa te roosteren door middel van beeldbuizen, maar ik laat niemand kiezen waarmee ik mijn grijze massa rooster. MythTV is misschien wel een absolute ramp om met bepaalde hardware aan de praat te krijgen, maar zodra het draait… Dan ontdek je pas hoe TV kijken bedoeld is.

Natuurlijk zijn er ook nog andere oplossingen, of oplossingen die direct uit een winkel komen, maar dat is toch niet leuk? – Het werkt allemaal al helemaal precies zoals je het wilt hebben, dan is er helemaal geen uitdaging meer aan. Maar voor de mensen met minder tijd, meer geld en minder technische kennis is dat een prima oplossing. Al kan je dan waarschijnlijk geen reclame overslaan…

Dus Pim, ik zou zeggen, je hebt 2 keuzes;

1. Je neemt schotel, zodat je kan blijven zappen en helemaal nergens wat van ziet.
2. Je gebruikt je technische kennis om ook met een goede oplossing te komen .

En zodra je eenmaal klaar bent met nummer 2, kan er je misschien zelfs voor kiezen om er een commercieel product van te maken .

Ik heb dus verder gewoon niets te zeggen op dit moment, maar goed, heb nog wel wat dingen waar ik over kan schrijven als ik klaar ben met onder handen nemen van blog. Eerst nog even de post categories oppoetsen en misschien wat normale pages maken. Zo had ik gezegd dat ik nog een posting zou doen over de hardware van mijn MythTV machine. Verder misschien nog een post om te zeuren op PHP en Ioncube, en misschien nog wat shell scripts…

Na een gezonde dosis pech tijdens het kopen van de hardware, ben ik dan eindelijk gaan bouwen.

Linux installatie ging eenvoudig, niet veel moeilijker dan normaal, met Debian Etch. Ik wilde eigenlijk Sarge, maar dat kon niet, omdat bepaalde dingen niet werkte in Sarge en wel in Etch.

Daarna kwam de taak van het proberen te installeren van de hardware. Dankzij de MythTV guide van Arie heb ik een deel kunnen doen, maar doordat ik een PVR 150 en een PVR 500MCE heb, ging het daarna mis. Maar aangezien Arie nog wel een uitdaging wilde hebben is hij een paar dagen achter elkaar (op afstand) aan het prutsen geweest met SSH en VNC (waarvoor mijn dank). En inmiddels heb ik een MythTV bak met > 500 GB vrije ruimte, en 3 tuners. De bedoeling is om er totaal 900 GB van te gaan maken, maar de SATA van het moederbord (dus wel de Promise onboard, maar die van het moederbord zelf) is niet ondersteund in 2.6.17, lijkt het.

Verder kwam het installeren van dingen als MythDVD en het S/pdif geluid, dit werkt nu ook allemaal. Nog niet helemaal perfect, maar we komen er wel.

Dankzij het volgende commando ging S/pdif prima werken, zelfs als het geluid via de /dev/dsp (OSS emulatie via ALSA) binnenkwam:

Ik hoop dat iemand er ooit nog wat aan heeft.

Zodra ik wat meer tijd heb, zal ik nog wat meer neerzetten over mijn ervaringen met Myth en mijn aanpassingen op Myth. Ik zou bijvoorbeeld graag in staat willen zijn MythWeather aan te passen zodat ik de gegevens van buienradar.nl en weer.nl er kan neerzetten .

I’ve heard from a friend that the OSS compatibility has possibly been removed, furthermore Hyper Threading seems to be broken. Furthermore, my dual Xeon keeps crashing while running 2.6.17.3.

After downgrading to 2.6.16.27 everything worked fine. My ‘monster’ is stable again, HT seems to be working like a charm and I haven’t seen a crash yet. Perhaps, with this posting, I can warn some people against upgrading to the latest kernel .
