Kernel 2.6.17.3 (+ a dual Xeon) = doomsday

It seems the 2.6.17 version of the Linux kernel (that being, the kernel from kernel.org) has some ‘small’ changes.

I’ve heard from a friend that the OSS compatibility has possibly been removed, furthermore Hyper Threading seems to be broken. Furthermore, my dual Xeon keeps crashing while running 2.6.17.3.

After downgrading to 2.6.16.27 everything worked fine. My ‘monster’ is stable again, HT seems to be working like a charm and I haven’t seen a crash yet. Perhaps, with this posting, I can warn some people against upgrading to the latest kernel ;) .
